Sunday School

The Sunday School for teaching young people the wonderful stories and truths from the Bible has always been a very important and active role of the Highway Gospel Hall. From these stories the valuable lessons for both the practical and spiritual life are taught to the children from kindergarten age to young adults. Life changing values in the truths from the Bible poured into young lives have lasting effects. As a child and into my teen years I was the student. I first learned of the seven dispensations in Sunday School from Ross Gorman who was my teacher then. Verse memorization was always a priority and often whole chapters were learned for various prizes.
It was my privilege to be a teacher of the senior class and to be the superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years in the 1980’s. The students in the senior class for the year 1985/86 were Chris Stutters, Catherine Abernethy, Darlene Stutters, Keith Sawatsky, Erikka, Gaelene Askland, Kevin Sawatsky, Michael Henkelman, Denise Buote, Connie Baker and Murray Milroy. That year we went through the scriptures to study the Christian Assembly in Prophecy, Picture and Practise. This study was a help to me to be grounded and settled in the truths of the local assembly gathered to the worthy name and person of the Lord Jesus Christ and has stood me in good stead to this day.
I have always found that the teacher receives a threefold blessing:
1) Blessed in the preparation for teaching the class as they prayerfully study the Word of God.
2) Blessed in the presentation, discussion, interaction and response from the students.
3) Blessed in the meditation afterward of the subjects taken up.
I would encourage young men and women to put their heart and energy into this good work and not faint but “Press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” Philippians 3:14.

“That from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim 3:15).
The focus and goal for all individuals involved with children’s work at the Highway Gospel Hall has always been to make plain the way of salvation, instil a reverence for God and to teach, disciple and encourage.
The book used for study and memorization is God’s Holy Word the bible. Bible stories are jam packed with valuable lessons that can be applied to every day circumstances. Bible verses are memorized each week by the children normally following the theme of the lesson or working through a chapter. Many teachers have found helpful resources on the internet and bible book stores to help teach their lessons in a fun and interactive way.
Each year around the Christmas season the children and teachers work hard to present a program to parents and friends. The last few years we have presented the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of different groups. The sequence started with “Seen of Angels” followed by “Wise Men Still Seek Him” and last year was “The Shepherd Who Became the Lamb”.
Working with children is a responsibility that is not to be taken lightly. Their young minds absorb information that puts them in good stead for the life that lies before them. Watching children grow, mature, and respond to the word of God is a reward in itself
